‘Mayaman Challenge’ by Francis Leo Marcos Goes Viral, Sparks Mixed Reactions

mayaman challenge

A man named Francis Leo Marcos is now making waves on social media for his ‘Mayaman Challenge’ as he challenged his rich neighbors and politicians to help the poor in this time of great need. While he went viral for his actions, with many people applauding his big heart to help the poor, others say he’s a fraud.

‘Mayaman Challenge’

The ‘Mayaman Challenge’ supposedly began when Marcos’ neighbors at Green Meadows Subdivision in Pasig City allegedly blocked the entry of a big truck carrying sacks of rice into the gated community. Marcos was angry about the block but can’t force the subdivision to let the truck in. So, he used a white Ford Expedition to take the rice from the truck and bring to his house.

In anger, he dared his neighbors to do the ‘Mayaman Challenge’ so they can help poor people instead of ‘hiding’ in their own homes in fear of the virus. In several vlogs, Marcos mocked his rich neighbors, especially the politicians who are ‘doing nothing’, he said.

Though the videos would soon go viral on his Facebook page, the account was suspended for some reason. He made new videos but was unable to replicate the success of the first one that got 4 million views.

Fake Millionaire?

It is easy to understand that Marcos’ videos angered his neighbors. According to Journal PH, a certain John Robert Raule Pelayo came forward to call out Marcos and reveal him as a fraud. Marcos’ real name was supposedly Norman Mangusin and he isn’t a legitimate owner at Green Meadows, only a co-tenant with a Chinese businessman named Bernard Chong.

Pelayo claimed that Marcos/Mangusin is a fake millionaire who’s allegedly facing charges of estafa, including a complaint from no less than former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos.

He has claimed that he is the son of Dr. Pacifico Marcos, the brother of my late husband, and that he has been chosen by the Marcos family as the custodian of alleged wealth which we are not in possession of; he uses my photograph on social media after photo opportunities and has produced a film positioning him as a signatory to the world’s wealth. He targets wealthy Chinese businessmen who want to do business in the Philippines and attracts them thru charitable causes,” the former First Lady reportedly told the NBI, Pelayo said.

While many doubt whether he is really rich or not, however, there were many netizens who were impressed by his actions in giving a lot of relief goods to poor people – including one sack of rice per recipient family! Fraud or not, he’s helping the poor, anyway.

What is Estafa?

Estafa is a case wherein the offender defrauds someone of money, usually a huge amount. It is different from theft in that the offender actually gains the trust of the other person in order to commit the deed instead of just taking away something from someone without permission.

Twins Named Jollibee and McDonald Graduate from College, Go Viral

A pair of twins named Jollibee and McDonald recently went viral for graduating from college. A lot of netizens were simply amused that they would hold such names, particularly because the names are of two rival fast food outlets! LOL.

Unique Names

While ‘Jollibee’ and ‘McDonald’ are pretty common names in terms of restaurants and fast food outlets, these are not so common as names of people. Mark Lester Andrei Cruzet shares the story behind the twins’ unique names.

Mark Lester is a friend of the family who grew up under the care of his School Paper Adviser (SPA) from elementary, Evelyn Pangindian. He shared that he had been with the family for many years since they helped him a lot, financially and emotionally.

According to Mark Lester, Ma’am Evelyn’s husband was the one who picked the names for the twins.

Kasi si kuya mo (asawa ni Ma’am) ‘yung uniqueness of the name at art of remembering, once na nalaman (‘yung names ng kambal) anjan agad ung natutuwa sila at madali nilang matandaan name nila,” Mark Lester remembered Ma’am Evelyn’s explanation.

Needless to say, the names are unique! And just as their names bring smiles to kids’ faces each time parents would say they would go to Jollibee or McDonald’s, Mark Lester said that the twins are also such great people.

I am sharing not just the lovable names of this twin but also how lucky to have their family as my second family as well. Mga kapatid na turing ko sa kambal na ito at pangalawang ina sa SPA ko. Minsan, sa kanila na nila ako pinapatulog lalo na noong napalayas ako sa amin. Tinutulungan kapag may problema lalo na financially. I am grateful dahil alam kong bukod sa sarili kong pamilya, may iba pa akong kikilalaning pamilya sa ibang tahanan. I am blessed beyond measure for finding a family away from our home,” Mark Lester wrote.

Love ko ‘tong family na ito, dahil sa kanila, bida ang saya.

Jollibee Versus McDonald’s

There is no question that McDonald’s is the number fast food outlet in the entire world. But did you know that in the Philippines, it could never be number one? That distinction is held by homegrown Jollibee, a brand that is now expanding across the world. While Jollibee might not overtake McDonald’s in its popularity across the world, the brand takes pride in always being number one in the Philippines.

Due to Unpaid Rent, Landlady Removes Roof of House Rented by Pregnant Woman

Due to unpaid rent, a heartless landlady removes the roof and even the door of the house rented by a pregnant woman! Kind neighbors had to help her out, especially because it was raining when this happened. Tsk. Tsk.

Unpaid Rent Due to Crisis

The COVID-19 crisis has affected a lot of people, with many losing their jobs and not being able to pay the rent or amortization for their homes. What is sad is that though the government specifically told landlords to provide a grace period for their renters, many still force them to pay up.

There have already been a number of reports of families being forced out of their rented homes because they were unable to pay the rent. But others have a different way of doing it.

One heartless landlady could not forcibly evict her tenants because of the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, officially designated as Republic Act No. 11469. However, she did something that is still akin to forcing them out: removing the roof and door of the rented house! Tsk. Tsk.

In a video shared by concerned neighbor Czairra Alliyah Cheng, a family could be seen scrambling to take their things out of harm’s way as the rain poured down inside their house because the roof was gone.

It turned out that the roof was removed by a certain ‘Aling Tess’ who owns the rented house. According to the post by Cheng, the family was unable to pay the rent because the pregnant woman’s husband is stuck by the lockdown and is in Bulacan.

Rent Payment in Bayanihan to Heal as One Act

Tenants may enjoy extended deadline to pay rent under the ‘Bayanihan’ law. Under the law, the President is given power to “provide for a minimum of 30-day grace period on residential rents falling due within the period of the enhanced community quarantine, without incurring interests, penalties, fees, and other charges.”

The Facebook page of Chacha Special Binalot Sa Dahon, a restaurant in San Pedro, Laguna, shared the bad experience they had with a fake order they received from someone who claims to be a ‘blogger’.

A certain Reynan Gañete made an order from the restaurant, to be delivered at around 7PM to 8PM. The order was worth Php1,011 and they charged him only Php50 for the delivery fee. This person told them to bring change for Php1,500.

Close to 7PM, the restaurant asked him for the landmark as the rider was already on the way to bring the food to the customer’s house. But the customer told them to cancel the order, saying that his cousins chose to just cook pancit canton instead of the food they ordered from the restaurant.

The restaurant told him the food was already cooked and was even being delivered to his house at the time he was chatting with them. But the guy told them to simply tell the rider that the order was canceled because they’ll be eating pancit canton instead.

Even though the restaurant told him the food was ready and on the way the customer just laughed it off and told them he’s not paying because this is actually a prank! When the restaurant pointed out that they were just trying to make a living, the ‘blogger’ said they were also doing the same thing…

Catfishing for ‘Pranks’

Netizens were angry at the ‘blogger’ guy named Reynan Gañete and they shared his photos, but it turned out the guy’s face was simply used by the fake account!

While catfishing is popular as a means of finding online lovers, it is also being used to make ‘pranks’, such as the one that victimized the restaurant.
