Being Different

Bimiana Capuno is an Aeta who is a recipient of Kara David’s “Project Malasakit”. The young woman recently graduated from senior high school at Holy Angel University in Angeles, Pampanga in the Philippines.

As an Aeta, Bimiana stood apart from all the other students in school because of her appearance. She is shorter, had darker skin, and had kinky hair. Yet even with the discrimination she felt from many people around her, Bimiana held her head up high and encouraged herself to work on reaching her dreams.

She recalls the first time she stepped on the stairs of the school, she felt scared and was unsure whether she could actually do it.

But she held her head up high and told herself, “Ikaw ang orihinal na Pilipino!” It was something that kept her going, throughout the challenges she faced in school and in the community.
