Chemist Makes Homemade Alcohol, Gives Them Away for Free Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with most areas lacking supply of alcohol and other much-needed disinfectants, a chemist went viral for making homemade alcohol that she offered to give away for free!
Free 70% Alcohol
Meg Reyes-Sy from Quezon City posted the offer on her Facebook. It would quickly go viral, particularly because there were so many who needed alcohol but can’t find any in supermarkets and pharmacies due to hoarding.
“Hello everyone! I’ve decided to go back to my roots as a licensed chemist so I could help people in need,” Meg wrote.
“I will be giving away FREE 70% ethyl alcohol to anyone who would be needing them. Why? Because I am honestly heartbroken as to how selfish other people could be. I’ve been seeing posts about those people WHO ACTUALLY NEED ALCOHOL and couldn’t by them anymore because it’s out-of-stock in groceries.”
Anticipating that there would surely be some people who might think she is doing this for attention, the licensed chemist added:
“We are living in a time where fear leads us to be selfish – where humanity is almost non-existent. I’m not doing this to be famous! HINDI KO KAILANGAN SUMIKAT! I’m doing this because it is the humane thing to do and I hope this random act of kindness can be an instrument for us to help each other in these hard times.
I’m using 97% cosmetic grade ethanol for this and purified drinking water. I’ve also put a moisturizer so that you won’t have dry hands when you use it. Baka kasi mag taka kayo sa feel. Haha.”
How to Avail of Free Alcohol
Since she only has limited stocks and planned to give out 250ml for each person, Meg announced that she could only give to 100 people. With that very limited number of people, she could only give to those who are really in need and would prioritize people who have elderly or infants at home or those with patients who have low immune systems.
To avail, they must show proof of meeting the requirements by sending Meg a selfie with these aforementioned people in their household.
Moreover, they have to provide containers for their alcohol – old containers would be perfect as that would also be recycling. They should also shoulder the grab fee for sending the containers to Meg’s home and for her sending the alcohol back to their homes. But she won’t be accepting fees for the alcohol itself.
The post earned praise from netizens, with many hoping that people will not take advantage of her kindness.
How to Make 70% Alcohol
This is easy to do, provided that there are enough materials and a large enough graduated cylinder.
To make 70% alcohol from 95% ethanol, take 70 mL of 95% ethanol and put in a graduated cylinder. Add enough water to bring the volume to 95 mL. This will give you 95 mL of 70% ethanol, an alcohol This works for any dilution. All you need, really, is a large-enough graduated cylinder.

Graduation day is one of the best days in a student’s life, but it’s not always the happiest for all.
Some also experience a bittersweet moment because their loved ones aren’t with them. While many are due to having OFW parents who can’t be home for the special, others are because the parents have already passed on.
SHS student Juvelyn Dela Torre Eugenio, 18, of North Cotabato made netizens cry after she carried her parents’ framed photos as she marched and posed on stage to receive her diploma.
She explained that during recognition days and other special events when she was younger, it was always her mother who would accompany her on stage.
She wants to share her success and milestones with her parents, but they’re no longer around.
They lost their father to heart failure in July 2020.
In 2022, the siblings decided to let their mother enjoy a vacation with her older children in Manila, only to discover that she was sick and already in the terminal stages of a stage 4 battle with the Big C. They lost her shortly thereafter.
Juvelyn shared that losing their parents took a toll on her mental health, especially because she had to stand as a parent to her younger brother.
On graduation day, she vowed that she wouldn’t cry despite seeing all the other students with their parents.
But she broke down on stage when a concerned teacher asked her about her parents and offered words of consolation after she showed her their photos.
Despite the challenges, Juvelyn plans on continuing her journey as she dreams of becoming a lawyer someday.

But a group of students from Dipolog Pilot Demonstration School impressed netizens with their skills in playing the ukulele as they presented “One Day” for the school’s 100-year celebration.
Seated on the steps of their school, the kids played the musical instruments seamlessly, except for a few issues.
And while some netizens pointed out that one of the kids appear to be struggling with the proper chords and kept shifting around during the entire performance, the overall presentation is still quite impressive!
Many netizens even commented on the post of the Facebook page “Kung Taga-Oroquieta City Ka” that they were deeply touched by the kids’ presentation and were crying while watching. Awww.
A lot also praised the coaches who made this possible – and others felt proud of the children even if they had no idea who these little ones are.
It’s also quite impressive to see that the class had so many ukuleles. It is unknown whether the kids own the musical instruments or if the school provided them, but what’s clear is that their presentation is truly admirable.
